International Scientific Conference with workshop in Public Space for students May 8th – 12ve 2018

Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Faculty of Paintings / Gdansk Shipyard – Young City Gdansk – Plenum

Organizer: Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk / co-organizer: Faculty of Paintings / head: dr Robert Sochacki

Light (as material) should serve as a neutral and starting point for a new awareness of the environment. That is how H. Mack and O.Piene described this physical phenomenon in their artistic group „Zero” in 1957. Light offers infinite and yet noninvasive potential to continuously alter the ambiance and appearance of the space it is used in. If we go deeper into the world’s and humanity history, we will discover that light is interfering between physical world and its perception from the verge of known existence; from the biblical „let there be light” up to contemporary artists working with reflective nature of light, this medium is still present in visual arts. This presence is both futile and transformative as well as undoubtedly constant in our environment. The diversity of use of light is rather unlimited and while combined with digital technologies its potential is intensified. Today light can be considered not only as a form of visual expression but also as a creative tool emerging from a cultural phenomenon known as light art. Its meaning and role in an artwork are non disputable and open to constant exploration.
